WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Police in North Carolina say four officers are on administrative duty after a man who was subdued with pepper spray died in custody.
Authorities in Winston-Salem said in a statement that 31-year-old Travis Nevelle Page became unresponsive after he was taken into custody Wednesday night following a brief struggle with officers. Page died at a hospital.
Police say they went to Page's home to investigate a report of a firearm being discharged. Police say they found a handgun on Page.
Authorities say the victim was black, and the four officers are white. Two have been with the department for 20 years or more; the others, one year and three years.
The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. Placing officers on administrative leave is standard procedure in such cases.
