BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - A mother and son are accused of stealing $123,000 from a central Florida homeowners association.
Authorities say the thefts took place over an 11-year span. A judge will decide their fate March 17 after the duo appeared in court this week to face charges of grand theft and scheming to defraud.
The Ledger (http://bit.ly/2jOPjzo ) reports 60-year-old Martha Beard pleaded guilty, while her 33-year-old son Matthew Beard entered a no contest plea.
Authorities say the Beards admitted to Polk County Sheriff's deputies that they took the money to pay household expenses. Martha Beard was elected treasurer of the Cimarron homeowners Association in South Lakeland in 2003. An audit of the association's bank account showed she started taking money in 2004.
Records don't list a lawyer for the pair.
