LITHONIA, Ga. (AP) - Police say a woman has been arrested after her 2-year-old son was shot during an apparent accident in a motel room near Atlanta.
DeKalb County police Maj. Stephen Fore tells local news media that Valencia Burks was arrested Wednesday. Fore says Burks was at the motel in Lithonia when her son found a handgun in her purse early Monday and accidently shot himself in the abdomen.
Police say the toddler is in critical condition at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
Lt. Mark Lavigne said the family is from North Carolina, and had just checked in at the motel on Sunday night.
Fore says the toddler is continuing to improve and expected to recover. Fore says Burks is charged with reckless conduct.
