WHITESBURG, Ga. (AP) - Divers have recovered the body of a 28-year-old man who apparently drowned while trying to swim across the Chattahoochee River over the weekend.

Carroll County Fire Chief Scott W. Blue tells news outlets that the body of Timothy S. Phillips was found Wednesday in Carroll County about a mile down the river from where he went underwater Saturday night.

A witness told investigators that Phillips decided to swim across the river while at a birthday party at McIntosh Reserve Park. Phillips made it across, but when he tried to get back to the other side, he called out in distress and disappeared under the water.

McIntosh Park is located about 50 miles southwest of Atlanta. Blue says the area is known to have strong currents.
