RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Olympic organizers in Rio de Janeiro and the city's mayor say they accept today's apology from U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte (LAHK'-tee).

Rio's mayor says he feels "pity" for Lochte and three other American swimmers involved in an incident at a gas station over the weekend, adding that "they did not represent the American athletes that are here."

In an online post, Lochte today said it was a "situation that could and should have been avoided." He initially had said he was a victim of an armed robbery -- and he still says it was a situation in which a stranger pointed a gun at him and demanded money.

Lochte had called it a gunpoint robbery; Brazilian police said he and three other swimmers vandalized a bathroom while intoxicated and were confronted by armed security guards.
