Mayor: 'Lawless Disruption' on Ocean Drive Repels Residents

Posted

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - This Florida city's mayor says bars are compromising the security and image of South Beach's famed Ocean Drive.

The Miami Herald reports that in an email Monday (http://hrld.us/29KYe1z ), Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine proposed an ordinance that would limit liquor sales after 2 a.m. along most of the oceanfront strip known for its neon lights, Art Deco architecture and bars and restaurants that attract crowds of tourists.

The Herald quotes Levine as writing that "lawless disruption" has escalated "to the point that many residents feel compelled to avoid the area altogether."

City commissioners will consider Levine's proposal at a meeting Wednesday. The ordinance would not apply to bars and lounges inside hotels.

Last year, Miami Beach banned alcohol sales between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. at sidewalk cafes.
