Legislators Hope to Save License Suspension Reform Bill

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - As the Florida legislative session nears its end, some lawmakers are in a race against time to correct what they say is an injustice to the working poor: the suspension of driver's licenses for reasons unrelated to driving violations.

St. Petersburg Republican Sen. Jeff Brandes will try to save the bill next week by amending it onto another bill.

He and others say license suspensions resulting from minor offenses or the failure to pay fines can lead to thousands in debt as collection charges pile up and people can't get their licenses back. But the bill to change suspension rules may die because it could cut revenue to clerks of court offices.
