Lay-offs at Florida Agency Trying to Bring Jobs to The State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida is going to slash jobs at the state-created agency that is responsible for trying to bring jobs to the state.

The Enterprise Florida board of directors voted Friday to make roughly $6 million in cuts that include eliminating more than two dozen jobs.

Enterprise Florida is also shuttering international offices and cancelling contracts it has with outside consultants.

Gov. Rick Scott is the board's chairman and supported the cuts. Scott pushed to reduce spending at the economic development agency after the Republican-controlled Legislature rejected its request for a $250 million fund that could be used to entice companies to the state.

Enterprise Florida is supposed to share expenses between private companies and taxpayers, but the state has been picking up most of the $34 million cost to run it.
