ATLANTA, GA. (AP) - The Georgia lawmaker who championed legislation allowing people with certain diseases to possess medical marijuana says allowing in-state growth and production is a natural next step.
Rep. Allen Peake, a Macon Republican, pre-filed a bill Wednesday that would allow between two and six medical cannabis manufacturers in Georgia. The proposal sets up a process for licensing the facilities, tracking all plants and products and other regulations.
It also adds several medical conditions to the list of diseases eligible for the state registry.
Peake says he's optimistic about the bill's chances, citing support from top House lawmakers. But law enforcement organizations long have opposed allowing any in-state growth, and Gov. Nathan Deal also has spoken against such a system.
Peake is expected to officially file the bill Monday.
