10,000 Homes, Businesses Had No Power After Substation Fire

Posted

MIAMI (AP) - Officials say about 10,000 Miami-area homes and businesses were left without power following a fire at a Florida Power & Light substation.

The Miami Herald (http://goo.gl/TV1PV7) reports that a massive blaze knocked out the Miami Springs facility Tuesday afternoon, closing off roads in the area. FPL says power was restored to most of their customers within an hour.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue got the blaze under control and reported no injuries.

The substation is located just north of Miami International Airport. MIA spokesman Greg Chin says the airport experienced a brief power flicker but quickly returned to normal operations. Flights were not affected by smoke from the fire.
