ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia State University officials say the cost to demolish an old building in downtown Atlanta have doubled to $10 million.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported school officials told Georgia's Board of Regents on Tuesday that the cost to demolish Kell Hall have doubled since the project was originally proposed. The school wants to create a greenway, with sidewalks and stairs between the building constructed in 1925 and the surrounding buildings and streets.

Georgia State officials said the cost to relocate utility lines was higher than expected. The school will pay for the increase.

A regents committee approved the revised demolition and plans for the space.

The building was originally a multi-story garage and was converted to academic space in 1946. It is now empty.
