MULBERRY, Fla. (AP) - Six Florida middle school students were treated at a hospital after eating THC-infused gummy candies while in gym class.

The Lakeland Ledger reports that a 12-year-old had the gummies and shared them with friends on Thursday.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said five students were taken to the hospital via ambulance and one was taken by their parents.

Detectives are investigating how the seventh grader acquired the candies.

Recreational use and possession of THC without a state-issued medical marijuana card is illegal in Florida. THC is the primary psychoactive chemical compound in cannabis. Edible products like candy are not currently available from dispensaries under state rules.
