TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Top Florida Republicans want to change the state's contentious school testing law.
GOP legislators on Wednesday said they were proposing "common sense" changes, although the legislation would not eliminate or cancel any state mandated tests.
The legislation would push back the date state standardized tests are given. Florida's main tests are usually administered in late February and March.
The bills sponsored by Sen. Anitere Flores and Rep. Manny Diaz would move the testing date to the last three weeks of the school year.
Legislators also want the Department of Education to study whether the SAT or ACT could be used by high schools instead of the Florida Standards Assessment. The SAT and ACT are college entrance exams.
In recent years there has been a backlash against the state's reliance on high-stakes standardized tests.
