Florida Panther Killed after Fight with Other Big Cat

Posted

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Officials say a Florida panther has been found dead after it was apparently killed by another of the big cats.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the 8-and-a-half-year-old female's carcass was found in the Golden Gate Estates in Collier County. The remains will be taken to a facility for a necropsy.

A total of 31 Florida panthers have been found dead in 2016, with 23 road fatalities.

Only about 180 of the big cats remain in the wild. Florida panthers once roamed the entire southeastern U.S.
