FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man will remain imprisoned for years though his life sentence required review after a U.S. Supreme Court decision.
Anthony Pullins was a juvenile when he was convicted of murder and given a mandatory life sentence in the 1995 slaying of a Fort Lauderdale convenience store owner. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles.
The Sun-Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/2a5FYii ) that Pullins, 38, asked Broward Circuit Judge Raag Singhal for leniency at a hearing Monday.
Singhal sentenced Pullins to 65 years in prison. Pullins has been in custody 21 years, and he will spend at least 21 more years behind bars.
Assistant Public Defender Robert Jakovich told the Sun-Sentinel he was "heartbroken and devastated."
The victim's daughter said she was satisfied with the sentence.
