TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Secretary of State Ken Detzner is officially telling legislative leaders and Gov. Rick Scott that Democrats have come up short in their push to toughen gun laws.

Detzner sent a letter Monday that reported only 50 legislators voted in favor of holding a special session to change the law following the massacre of 49 club patrons in Orlando. Eighty-nine legislators voted no.

Democrats last week triggered an obscure state law that required Detzner to poll all 160 members. A yes vote by three-fifths of the Legislature - 96 votes - would have resulted in a special session.

Democrats want to prevent known terrorists and those on the no-fly and FBI watch lists from legally obtaining a gun license. The proposed legislation would also require a thorough investigation of anyone removed from those lists who wants to obtain a gun.
