Ex-Sheriff's Deputy Accused of Sexual Contact with Inmate

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A former Chatham County Sheriff's deputy has been arrested and fired after being accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with an inmate.

Officials said in a statement Monday that Cpl. Samuel Joshua Richardson was charged with sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority.

Sheriff John Wilcher says the charge stems from a five-week-long investigation into whether Richardson had sexual contact with the female inmate.

That investigation started after another deputy told jail officials about Richardson's relationship with the inmate.

Wilcher says Richardson was then caught on camera with the prisoner.

Richardson had been a deputy for the last seven years. Wilcher says more charges could come from this investigation.

It isn't immediately clear if Richardson has an attorney.
