Deputy Requests Administrative Leave after K-9 Dies

Posted

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - An Alachua County Sheriff's Office deputy has requested administrative leave after his K-9 died in the backseat of his patrol car.

The Ocala Star Banner reports that deputy Tommy Willcox went on leave Monday afternoon after his K-9, Robbie, died from heat exhaustion Friday at his home in Newberry.

Lt. Brandon Kutner says Robbie was left inside the car while Willcox left to join his family. He returned to the car and found the dog unresponsive in the backseat.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the K-9's death. Kutner says Willcox is not under investigation. He says the dog's death has affected Willcox and his family.
