JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a Jacksonville woman has died after she was found face down on a boogie board in the ocean.

Media outlets report the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says 45-year-old Penny Smith died Sunday after being pulled from the water at Huguenot Park.

Deputies say Smith was swimming with a child at the beach when she and the child were caught in a rip current.

A lifeguard told deputies that she was alerted to the victim by other people in the area. She found the child hanging onto the boogie board and the victim face down on the boogie board.

Smith was taken to a hospital, where she died. It is unclear how she died.

The lifeguard told authorities that she never saw Smith's face under the water.
