TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A Florida bill to require a unanimous jury recommendation before the death penalty can be imposed is ready for a full vote in both legislative chambers.
The Senate Rules Committee approved the bill Wednesday, the day after the House version was approved by its final committee.
It means the effort to fix the state's death penalty law will likely be one of the first bills sent to Gov. Rick Scott when the 60-day session begins March 7.
The bill is the second time in two years the Legislature has tried to resolve constitutional issues with the state's death penalty sentencing law. Last year, the state Supreme Court declared a new law requiring a 10-2 jury vote to impose the death penalty was unconstitutional, saying a unanimous vote is required.
