PLANTATION, Fla. (AP) - Authorities have charged a Florida man with murder, saying he hit his wife with a hammer while their 7-year-old son slept nearby.
Plantation police say 42-year-old Marc Berkowitz told them Thursday's killing came because he was mad that Anastisiya Savitskaya was planning to divorce him. Investigators said Berkowitz told his son to look away so he wouldn't see his mother's body. Police said he told them his wife was still making noises so he dragged her out of the bedroom and strangled her with a cord.
Barbara Waterson said the family moved in with her about a year ago. She described the couple's relationship as toxic and said it was like living in a war zone.
The Sun Sentinel reports he's being held without bond. It's unclear if he'd retained an attorney to comment on the charges.
