SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Officials at Armstrong State University have recommended that the school end its athletic program as it prepares to consolidate with Georgia Southern University next year.
Armstrong athletic director Lisa Sweany said in a statement Tuesday that the programs are expected to end after this academic year.
The Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/2mjk9Sy ) says it isn't clear how many Armstrong employees, including administrators, coaches and staff, would lose their jobs. Officials say the employees will have a role through December.
The recommendation will have to be approved by a 41-member consolidation committee.
The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents agreed in January to merge Armstrong State with Georgia Southern in Statesboro.
Armstrong's Division II Pirates have won 13 national titles, all in tennis. Georgia Southern competes in Division I.
