TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — More than 800 athletes were supported by more than 1,000 friends and family at Florida State University's Mike Long Track Sunday, for the AAU Regional Youth Track and Field Championships.

Athletes of all ages tried their shot at gold in the long jump, 100 yard dash and discus.

Some teams came as far as Alabama to compete. Meet Director, Alice Sims says this competition helps bring money to the whole county.

"We want people to know that we are a beautiful city," said Sims. "We have great universities and colleges here and these young people and families get a chance to see what Tallahassee is all about but also just for these kids to be able to have this experience because a lot of these meets are not held at university campuses they're held at like High schools and community centers but here they get to come to the Florida State University and that's special."

Sims says she hopes the event continues to grow even bigger next year.
