BRIGHTON, Mass. — A five-run sixth inning in game two helped the Seminoles avoid the doubleheader sweep as No. 13 Florida State (35-8, 12-2 ACC) earned a 5-4 win over Boston College (22-16, 9-4 ACC) after falling in game one of the day, 1-0.
The Seminoles continue to redeem each possible loss of the season with its win in game of the doubleheader. Of the eight losses in 2018, seven have come against teams that the Seminoles would play again, either in a doubleheader or later in a weekend tournament. In all six of those situations, FSU has earned the win in game two, defeating No. 20 Michigan (2-0), South Alabama (14-1), No. 10 Alabama (3-1), Hofstra (5-0), No. 6 Oregon (2-1), Pitt (8-0) and BC (5-4).
“Good to see the fight tonight from the team,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “Boston College came out and challenged us all day in the circle and we struggled early on. But we kept fighting to stay present and battled some difficult at bats and situations in game two to come back and win. Meghan King pitched great today even in the loss in game one and came in to get the save for us in game two. Looking forward to making some adjustments and closing out the series tomorrow.”
Game 1: Boston College 1, No. 13 Florida State 0
The Seminoles got a runner to second base in each of the first three innings on a walk by Carsyn Gordon in the first and a groundout, a double by Zoe Casas in the second, as well as a walk and stolen base by Cali Harrod in the third inning, but they would all be left stranded as BC’s Allyson Frei recorded six strikeouts in the early going.
Boston College scored the only run of the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of Seminole errors. Emme Martinez drew a one-out walk and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Lexi DiEmmanuele hit a ball down the left field line with two outs that was misplayed, allowing a run to score.
Florida State only had two baserunners in the final three innings, with walks by Gordon in the sixth and Casas in the seventh. Anna Shelnutt lifted a two-out shot to right center in the seventh that was caught at the wall to end the game.
Meghan King (13-5) took the loss, despite setting a season high with nine strikeouts in the game. She allowed just four hits and one walk over 6.0 innings, with one unearned run.
Game 2: No. 13 Florida State 5, Boston College 4
Boston College tallied seven hits, including three doubles and a home run in the first two innings to take a quick 4-0 lead in game two.
The Seminoles got a pair of runners on base in the third inning on walks by Morgan Klaevemann and Gordon, but Sydney Sherrill’s hard liner down the third base line was snagged by BC’s Martinez and she stepped on the bag to end the inning.
Florida State scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Harrod led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and Gordon followed with a single to center for the Seminoles’ first base hit of the game. Jessie Warren was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out in the inning and was pinch-run for by Deja Bush.
Casas hit a ball back to the circle, but the throw home by BC pitcher Jessica Dreswick was not caught by Jordan Chimento, allowing Harrod and Gordon to score on the play, cutting the BC lead to 4-2.
Elizabeth Mason followed with a ball up the third base line, and Bush scored as she was obstructed on the play at the plate. Leslie Farris put the Noles in front with a two-out, two-RBI double to left, scoring Mason and Korina Rosario, who pinch-ran for Casas.
FSU starter Kylee Hanson gave up four runs on six hits in 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and did not factor in the decision. Cassidy Davis pitched 2.2 innings of relief, scattering three hits without giving up a walk or a run.
Savanna Copeland (2-0) earned the win and pitched the BC fifth for the Seminoles, giving up a walk and a single and recording a strikeout in the scoreless inning of relief.
King pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits and two walks with two strikeouts to close out the game and record her second save of the season.
The Seminoles and Eagles will wrap up their series on Saturday, April 14 with a single game at 2:30 p.m. It will be the field dedication for BC’s new stadium at the Harrington Athletic Village.
