TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 14 Florida State fell in the series finale to Miami Sunday afternoon, dropping an 11-5 decision to the Hurricanes at Dick Howser Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,377. The Seminoles (31-14, 13-10 ACC) won the first two games of the series over Miami (18-25, 11-13).
Starting pitcher Andrew Karp left after just four outs due to a sickness. Jonah Scolaro (1-1) was the first of five relief pitchers for the Seminoles, allowing Isaac Quinones’ three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Hurricanes the lead for good.
“You tip your hat to the University of Miami, they did a very good job,” head coach Mike Martin said. “Andrew wanted so much to pitch and pitch well, wanted to stay in the game, but we don’t make excuses. It was unfortunate that he couldn’t pitch today.”
Miami’s Andrew Cabezas (5-4) allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings for the win.
Steven Wells was the only Seminole with multiple hits, reaching safely in the second and fourth innings. He also had a run-saving catch at the wall in right field to end the second inning. Drew Mendoza and Nick Derr each drew a pair of walks for the Noles.
Scolaro entered with the bases loaded in the second inning in relief of Karp and allowed a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Miami lead. FSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a pair of singles and two walks.
Scolaro worked scoreless third and fourth innings before Quinones’ home run gave Miami the lead. The Hurricanes built on that lead with four runs in the sixth against Conor Grady and Austin Pollock, including back-to-back walks with the bases loaded and a two-run error.
Miami built the lead to 11-3 before Rhett Aplin’s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Frankie Bartow. Mendoza flew out to center field to end the game.
Martin tied Augie Garrido for the most wins in NCAA history Saturday night against the Hurricanes. Martin and the Seminoles next shot at win No. 1,976 comes Saturday when FSU will visit No. 10 Clemson for its final road games of the season.
Monday’s series finale against the Tigers will air nationally on ESPNU.
The Seminoles were looking for its second-consecutive ACC sweep after taking all three games at Boston College last weekend.
- Cal Raleigh threw out his 12th baserunner of the season, and second of the weekend, to end the third inning.
- Steven Wells had two hits Sunday, his sixth multi-hit game of the season and fifth in the last two weeks.
- Jonah Scolaro pitched 3.0 innings Sunday, his sixth appearance this season of at least three innings.
- Mike Salvatore’s double was his sixth of the season and FSU’s only extra-base hit in the game.
- Rhett Aplin was 1-for-4 with a two-run single and leads FSU with a .326 average in 23 ACC games.
- Andrew Karp and Jonah Scolaro were each called for a balk in the first four innings. FSU had just two balks on the season entering Sunday.
