BRIGHTON, Mass. — With temps in the mid-40s, including winds gusting to 20+ mph throughout most of the game, the players and the offenses for No. 13 Florida State (35-8, 12-2 ACC) and Boston College (22-16, 9-4 ACC) were chilled on Saturday afternoon as FSU earned a 5-0 victory over BC to win the season series over the Eagles.
The Seminoles recorded eight hits, including five infield singles and drew three walks to carry FSU to its 14th shutout of the season.
Florida State extends its conference series unbeaten streak to 46 and have a 42-0-4 mark against ACC foes, including 34 sweeps since last losing a conference series at Maryland on May 5-6, 2012. The Seminoles are 120-12 in their last 132 ACC regular season games, dating back to 2012.
“Outstanding way to bounce back from yesterday,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “We got out in front early with some quality situational hitting and Kylee and our defense did a great job in the challenging weather. Our goal every weekend is to win the series, and we got the job done against a scrappy and talented team in Boston College.”
Florida State opened the scoring with a lone run in the top of the first inning. Carsyn Gordon drew a one-out walk, stole second and moved up to third base on a groundout. Jessie Warren drew a walk on four pitches and Zoe Casas hit an infield RBI single to put the Noles on top 1-0.
It marked the 20th time that FSU has scored in the first inning and the Noles have plated 49 runs in the first frame, the most of any inning so far this season. The Seminoles are 20-0 when scoring in the first inning and 31-0 overall when being the first team to score.
Boston College got a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the first with a walk by Annie Murphy and Emme Martinez getting hit by a pitch with one out. FSU starting pitcher Kylee Hanson got the Seminoles back in the dugout after retiring the next two hitters on a pair of lineouts.
Elizabeth Mason worked her way around the bases in the second inning to score a run and make it 2-0 Seminoles. The redshirt freshman led off the inning with a walk and stole second base for her 12th SB of the season. She moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch by BC’s Allyson Frei.
Boston College got its first hit of the game on a two-out single to right by Annie Murphy in the third inning.
Florida State broke the game open in the sixth inning, loading the bases with nobody out on a walk by Warren, a single by Casas and a bunt single by Korina Rosario. Mason lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring pinch-runner Deja Bush to make it 3-0 Noles. Anna Shelnutt was hit by a pitch to reload the bases and Sabrina Stutsman knocked a pinch-hit single through the right side to score two runs and extend the Seminole lead to 5-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Hanson retired 13 of the last 16 batters she faced to close out the complete-game shutout. She allowed just three hits in the game with two walks and four strikeouts.
Florida State returns home for its final home series of the regular season as the Seminoles host Louisville on Senior Weekend on April 21-23. The festivities will begin with the senior banquet on Friday night and games at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, 12:00 p.m. on Sunday and 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Senior Day will be celebrated prior to Sunday’s game as we honor Kylee Hanson, Morgan Klaevemann, Korina Rosario and Jessie Warren for their exceptional careers.
