Late FAMU Surge Falls Short In Wednesday Loss

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Nov. 22) – The FAMU Women’s Basketball teamdropped its’ 2017-18 home opener Wednesday afternoon, falling 73-68 to the visiting Sacred Heart Pioneers at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (0-5) trailed 39-33 at the half and 60-50 after three periods, but pushed the Pioneers (2-2) to bring in the fourth period, outscoring the visitors, 18-13 in the final 10 minutes of the game.

The Pioneers pushed their third quarter lead to 13 points, 67-54 with 7:03 left, but FAMU surged behind the scoring of Florence Ouattara and Shakeyrra Morrison to close to three points, 71-68 on a Morrison free throw with 49 seconds left.

Sacred Heart’s Erin Strorck sank two free throws with nine seconds left to clinch the gamje for the Pioneers.

Shakeyrra Morrison led FAMU with 15 points and eight rebounds, followed byOuatarra’s 14 points and eight boards. Shulunda Burney-Robinson added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Tykera Carter led all scorers with 20 points for Sacred Heart, followed by Storck with 14 points. Jenna Silletti led all rebounders with 14 boards for the Pioneers.

WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU heads to the Big Bend area of Texas for holiday tournament games Saturday and Sunday, against Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday (3:00 p.m. Central), and Sunday against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 12 noon Central.
