TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher announced redshirt senior quarterback Sean Maguire will undergo surgery on his right foot and is expected to miss approximately four weeks following the first full-pads practice on Saturday at the Albert J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility.
“The outside bone in his foot, they have to put a screw in it,” Fisher said. “About four weeks, so he’ll probably be back about the second or third game of the year. He suffered the injury the second day of practice. He felt something funny he thought, and yesterday it really started to bother him toward the end of practice. The bone on the outside of the foot. It’s kind of like the injury around the nation right now. They’ll put the screw in probably Monday.”
Maguire posted a 4-2 record as FSU’s quarterback in 2015, throwing for 1,520 yards and 11 touchdowns. He passed for 348 yards and three touchdowns against Syracuse and also led the Seminoles to a 27-2 victory over a Top-10-ranked Florida team in the Swamp. The Sparta, N.J., native throw for 392 yards against Houston in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl despite being knocked out of the game in the first quarter for three series with a left ankle injury. Maguire missed spring practice after ankle surgery, but was full-go and splitting first team reps with redshirt freshman Deondre Francois when fall camp began.
“You have to understand something – Sean is someone with as much character as anybody on our football team,” Fisher said. “You talk about endurance, tough, team guy, does everything. Of course he’s down and felt bad, but there was no hesitation on what to do and how to do it. I have the utmost respect for Sean Maguire.”
Fisher said Maguire’s injury is similar to the one suffered by sophomore defensive back Derwin James, who dressed out in full pads but did not fully participate in practice on Saturday. The preseason All-American is expected to be full-go sometime next week.
Francois is expected to take the majority of the first team quarterback reps, but Fisher said he will continue to rotate players on the first team offense and did not name a starter for the Sept. 5 opener against Ole Miss at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
