CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL) - A school mascot recognized by ESPN and Sports Illustrated for its originality can be found on the football field of Cairo High School.

Inspired by Cairo's syrup making business, the Cairo Syrupmakers are the only mascot of their kind in the world. The costume resembles an actual pitcher used to pour syrup.

Legend has it that during a rainstorm many years ago, workers from the Roddenbery Syrup Company brought over rain jackets. The players wore the jackets; and from then on, the school became known as the syrupmakers.

The syrup makers were recognized by ESPN in 1986 as the number one nick name for a high school mascot, and Sports Illustrated also named the syrup makers the most unique mascot.

Syrupmakers are traditionally called maid for girls or makers for boys. The high school also has a group of male students that assist the syrupmaker mascot in game day activities.
