CRAWFORDVILLE, FL (WTXL) -- The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to take extra precaution when swimming this weekend -- in light of Saturday's drowning accident at the Wakulla River.

36-year-old Jonathan Peddie was swimming downriver from his friends' boat when he drowned. The Sheriff's Office says it was an "accidental drowning."

At Wakulla Springs, visitor Jennifer Aleman explained how she and her friends stay safe this Memorial Day weekend.

"We bring lots to drink and make sure everybody's hydrated and that we have sunscreen on from head to toe and we stay together," she said. "We never go anywhere apart and make sure that we don't talk to strangers and that kind of thing. Just stay close together in the water and make sure everyone is swimming safely."

Over in Suwannee County, officials are keeping an eye on visitors who may head to the Santa Fe and Suwannee rivers. Suwannee County Fire Rescue will have a firefighter and paramedic riding along with the FWC in case of a medical emergency. Officials say these rivers see a significant spike in traffic during the holiday weekend.
