TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Normal visitation at four Florida Department of Corrections institutions is scheduled to resume this week.

FDC canceled last weekend's visitation because of the large quantity of contraband recently intercepted at the facilities.

Visitation was canceled at the Graceville Work Camp (Graceville); Hamilton Correctional Institution, Work Camp and Annex (Jasper); Madison Work Camp (Madison); and Sumter Correctional Institution (Bushnell).

Canceling visitation allows staff resources to be devoted to institutional searches, further eradicating contraband and ensuring the safety of inmates, staff and the public, FDC said.

FDC said cellphones, illegal drugs and weapons are among the top items found and are often linked to gang activity.

The contraband cases have preliminarily have been linked to "throw overs," FDC said. "A throw over occurs when an individual from outside the facility attempts to introduce contraband over the secure perimeter fence."
