TAMPA, FL (WWSB) - Doyle Mullins served in Vietnam, entitling him to receive benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and for the past 20 years, he's been telling the VA that he is blind.

That qualified for him for a variety of benefits including disability payments, grants from the VA and medical benefits payments for his wife. That is until an investigator saw Mullins regularly mowing his lawn, driving a car and running errands.

A United States District Judge sentenced the 71 year-old military veteran from Bradenton to nine months house arrest and five years of probation.

The Court also entered a money judgment against him in the amount of $583,485.74, which they said is the amount he stole from the Department of Veterans Affairs from 1995 - 2017.

Mullins had pleaded guilty to the charges prior to his sentencing.
