TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tragedies such as the recent Las Vegas massacre and Strozier Library shooting have kept Tallahassee Memorial Hospital on high alert for any type of emergency situation.

The Bixler Trauma and Emergency Center is the only level 2 trauma center in the Big Bend. People who sustain traumatic injuries are sent there for specialized care.

WTXL was able to speak to the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, Philip Doyle, who told us the trauma center has training drills at least twice a year which simulate a variety of mass casualty events.

If there is an overflow, they have plans and necessary vehicles to transport patients to nearby hospitals once they are stabilized.

Not only are mass casuality situations extremely stressful, but identifying patients presents an additional problem.

The center has plans to stay on lockdown if necessary to protect the safety of the patients and staff in any emergency situation.
