THOMASVILLE, GA (WTXL) - Thomasville is honoring the fallen public safety heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11.

Thomasville Fire Rescue, along with other organizations, is sponsoring the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. The stair climb will take place on Monday and require each participant to climb or walk the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.

Each individual will also carry with them the photo and name of one fallen hero.

“This is the third year that we’ve honored those public safety officers who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center,” said Tim Connell, Assistant Chief for Thomasville Fire Rescue. “This is just a small way that we can remember the sacrifice that these officers made that September day. While everyone was running from the attack, these brave men and women were running toward it in the hopes of saving lives.”

The event will be held at the Jacket’s Nest, Thomas County Central High School’s football stadium, and includes two climb sessions.

Session one will be held from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and session two will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those who are unable to climb or walk are encouraged to attend the Remembrance Ceremony that will be held at 8:30 a.m.

The climb is not timed and all participants are encouraged to complete the course at their own pace.

“The goal of this event is not to win any sort of race or trophy,” said Connell. “The purpose is to remember those who sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001, so that others could live.”

Pre-registration is available at the Everett-Milton YMCA. The cost is $15 ad includes a t-shirt for all participants. Proceeds from the event will go to the Nation Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
