TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - During this time of gratitude and giving, the City of Tallahassee is trying to light up the holiday season for our friends in St. Croix.

Twelve local utility workers left Tuesday to work on restoring power to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The goal is to restore 90 percent of the island's power by the end of the year.

Crews will rotate, working in 2 week shifts until the job is complete. Ocala, Fort Pierce, and Homestead are also sending crews as part of a mutual aid agreement under the Florida Municipal Electric Association.

"I want to thank the management of the City of Tallahassee for supporting us in doing this sort of thing because it is a nice thing that we will support our other utilities and citizens of the country," said Richard Ash, the assistant general manager of Power Delivery Tallahassee.

These volunteers are generously spending their Thanksgiving helping families who have been without power since hurricanes Irma and Maria.

In return, the Virgin Islands water and power authority is housing and feeding the crews.
