TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee City Commission is discussing how to make finding parking less of a nightmare.

Comissioners are proposing that the city gets rid of the old pay by coin meters downtown and replace them with high-tech pay-by-app meters.

Officials with the city say the new system would allow people to extend their parking time without having to go to their cars and allow multiple forms of payment.

In Collegetown, the meters are a little different and people can pay by card and place a receipt in their dashes.

The city compiled data from those meters and saw good results, but say that another system could yield even better results.

If the measure is passed, the price to park would increase from 50 cents to $1, but the city says that is still below the national average of $4.

"Implementing a new high tech parking system in our downtown area, we believe, we know that it will enhance the overall experience for visiting and working in the downtown area," said Alison Fairs, the City of Tallahassee communications director. "That measure would also get rid of the ticket system in Kleman Plaza, instead putting meters at every parking spot.

The future of parking lies in the hands of the City Commissioners on Wednesday. If passed, the price change would start October 1.

Faris said the likelihood of seeing those new meters go up before the end of the year is slim.

What do business owners in the area have to say about these proposed changes?

Faris said the Downtown Improvement Authority met with business owners in the area and they were all hopeful about the proposal. They all echoed that this would drive customers their way.
