(WTXL) - With rain and colder temperatures causing problems, animal care professionals want to make sure people are giving their pets what they need.

Officials at Paws Humane in Columbus, Georgia, say the cold temperatures can be harmful to pets.

When there are freeze advisories, they say its especially important to make sure your pets are protected from the cold.

If they must stay outside, you may need to weatherproof your pet's structure or shelter to make sure they're safe, including adding straw, hay and/or blankets.

If you have any stray animals or cats near where you live, you can knock on your car before starting it in the morning just in case something is sleeping under your car or near your engine.
