LIVE OAK, FL (WTXL) - Suwannee County commissioners shut down a proposal Tuesday night, which would have decriminalized marijuana.

The board voted five to zero against the measure.

The state attorney at the meeting says the issue would be best handled through the state, not by individual counties. The sheriff considered marijuana as a "gateway drug" and vowed he wouldn't honor the ordinance if it passed.

Lake City resident Kyle Green brought up the proposal. He's already spoken in front of Columbia County leaders on the issue. He says he will travel to five surrounding counties with the same proposal. He is scheduled to address Lafayette County commissioners on May 23.
