TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--Two people are wanted for scamming a cashier at a grocery store.

The Tallahassee Police Department says it happened at 11 p.m. at the Publix on Thomasville Road on June 16.

Police say it's called the short change scam, one of the older ones they see.

The scam artists use distractions techniques to keep the extra money.

Police say a man and a woman with two young children requested $20 bills in exchange for six $100 bills. Then they changed their mind asking for quarters for the entire amount.  Police say the cashier couldn't give them the quarters and gave them the $100 bills back. The suspects handed the $20 bills back but left out $300 which was not caught until after they left the store.

TPD reminds businesses to be aware of this scam and apply these prevention instructions when providing change or money:

-Be aware of the types of bills you are handing out. It's easy to forget when people are trying to distract you.

-Count the change you get back immediately. Count all money handed to a customer out loud.

-Don't let anyone interrupt your count. Make sure you stay focused on what money is being given.

-Report any suspicion of fraud immediately. Report any fraud to management and law enforcement immediately.
