TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- A suspect is dead after he was shot by a Tallahassee police officer Wednesday night.  Officer David Stith was responding to the 2400 block of West Tharpe Street on a report on a burglary in progress, said police.

The officer and the suspect, Jeremy Lett, were involved in a "phsysical altercation" and that is when the officer shot Lett, said police.

Lett was taken to the hospital, where he later died, said police. Officer Stith was uninjured and placed on paid administrative leave, which is normal procedure.

TPD says it is coordinating with the Office of the Medical Examiner and the State Attorney's Office to ensure a thorough investigation is completed.

Police are asking any witnesses who saw what happened in this incident and have not yet been contacted by police, to please contact them at (850) 891-4200.
