Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL) -- A state agency is asking storm victims to be on guard and aware of potential scams.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation is urging consumers to protect themselves from unlicensed workers offering to make repairs to their homes or businesses.

Officials say this practice is common after a storm and residents can be taken advantage of.

In order to avoid this, experts say you should check and make sure that an individual is a licensee before signing any contract or making papers.

You can verify a licensee by contacting the Department of Business and Professional Regulations online. You can also call 850-487-1395.

If you feel like you have hired someone without a license, you can email any complaints to the Unlicensed Activity Program.
