TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - A new study by Florida State Researchers finds that both a lack of stimulation in the workplace and a dirty working environment can have a long-term effect on the minds of employees.

Professor of Family and Child Sciences Joseph Grzywacz met with WTXL to discuss the implications of the study and some tips for those looking to become more productive in the workplace.

According to FSU Research, the study shows that working in an unclean workplace and working in an unstimulating enviroment can both play an important role in long-term cognitive well being.

The study found that greater occupational complexity — that is the learning of new skills and taking on new challenges — resulted in stronger cognitive performance as employees aged.

FSU also reported that men and women who had jobs that exposed them to a dirty working environment saw a cognitive decline.

"Both of these issues are important when we think about the long-term health of men and women", says Professor Grzywacz. He also says it is important to design jobs that ensure all workers have some decision making ability may protect cognitive function later in life, as well as cleaning up the workplace.

Grzywacz' findings can be seen published in the June issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
