TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - As part of Active Transportation Week, Star Metro offered free rides for everyone.

The city teamed up with the Department of Health and Department of Transportation, so that anyone who wanted to take the bus rode it for free.

City Commissioner Gil Ziffer says he hopes more people will choose to ride the bus more often.

"Take a look around when your driving somewhere and you see all these cars and you may have stopped at a light and your trying to get home and there's one person in each car," said Ziffer. "And were trying to reduce that take the bus take star metro give it a try today's a good day to do it or sample it another day."

Commissioner Ziffer says this is definitely good for those who use their cell phones a lot since it's a hands-free mode of transportation.

There was a familiar face on the bus Thursday, professional stock car racing driver and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competitor Scott Lagasse Jr.

Another way to take part in Active Transportation Week is taking a bike ride with Pace, Tallahassee's bike share program.

Pace racks are located in C. K. Steele Plaza, Cascades Park and many other locations throughout Tallahassee.

You can see all the bike rack locations and even get your first ride free through the Pace app.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - If you're looking for a way to save some money or maybe even be more environmentally friendly for this upcoming Earth Day, the City of Tallahassee has you covered.

Star Metro is offering free rides for everyone Thursday as part of Take a Trip on Transit Day.

This fare-free service day supports the Florida Pedestrian and Bicycle Coalition's activities during Active Transportation Week, which is April 15 - 21.

Active Transportation Week is a joint initiative between the Florida Departments of Health and Transportation. It aims to promote walking, biking and transit as active transportation options in the Capital City.

Commissioner Ziffer says this is definitely good for those who use their cel phones a lot since it's a hands-free mode of transportation.

American professional stock car racing driver Scott Lagasse Jr. will be joining StarMetro riders on Thursday morning from 9 to 11 a.m.

Lagasse, the spokesperson for the Florida Department of Transportation's Alert Today Florida campaign, aims to increase the public awareness of pedestrian and bicyclist safety and to help drive down fatalities on Florida's roadways.
