TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- The city of Tallahassee will soon be home to one of the largest solar farms in the state. The new farm will be able to produce about 20 megawatts...that's enough energy to power about 3,400 homes in the Capital City.

Living in the Sunshine State, it makes sense to use the sun's energy, but due to the high cost of installing solar panels on your home, not everyone is able to benefit from solar power.

That's where this new solar farm, known as Tallahassee Solar, comes into play. After paying an initial fee, anyone who pays for utilities from the city can elect to use solar power to help power their home or business, all while reducing their utility bill.

"It makes economic sense," says City Commissioner Scott Maddox. "It makes financial sense. But most of all, it makes sense for Mother Nature. If you want to be part of the renewable energy movement, you want to harness the sun rather than fossil fuels, you can do so through your own utility, right here in the city of Tallahassee."

Tallahassee Solar, is expected to begin construction in May behind the airport.
