ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Denali National Park rangers say the remains of a 22-year-old Georgia man were found this week by backcountry hikers.

The remains are believed to be that of Etienne Terrell of Atlanta.

Hikers notified rangers Tuesday that they had discovered the remains at an abandoned campsite near the Teklanika (Tek-lah-NEE-kah) River.

The park issued Terrell a 28-day backcountry permit on July 3.

He had told family members that he was planning an extended wilderness trip in Alaska after his military discharge.

The Park Service says Terrell had not been reported as a missing person.

Rangers made a tentative identification from the remains, personal effects and communications with friends and family.

The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine cause of death.
