TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Republican Presidential Candidate Marco Rubio told an Iowa sports radio station that Florida State University is for people who do not get accepted to the University of Florida.

According to ESPN, in an interview with KNXO 1460 AM in Des Moines, Iowa, the U.S. Senator from Florida said, “I think there has to be a school where people that can’t get into Florida can go to college. And that’s why we have Florida State.”

Rubio, a Miami native, received his bachelors degree from UF and his law degree from the University of Miami.

Even though he did lay some smack talk on the Seminoles, according to ESPN, he did acknowledge that Florida State has had the upper hand recently in football.

UPDATE (9/15/15):

Marco Rubio tweeted on Tuesday: "#FSU fans relax. It was just college football trash talk on sports radio, not serious statement on @meetthepress." That was followed by "But we are still going to #BeatFSU."
