Officials: More than 570,000 gallons of wastewater spilled in Gadsden County

GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - More than 82,000 gallons of raw sewage was spilled in Gadsden County due to power outages caused by Hurricane Michael.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is reporting eight incidents that happened on Wednesday, October 10, the day Hurricane Michael blew through the Big Bend area:

  • Approximately 500,000 gallons of treated wastewater was released from a lift station (14th Avenue) due to power failure in Havana. The release did not enter any storm drains or but did enter an unnamed waterway that discharges into the Ochlockonee River. Cleanup actions are complete.
  • Approximately 20,000 gallons of raw sewage was released from a manhole (W. Circle Drive) due to a power failure in Quincy. The release did not enter any storm drains, but did enter the Tanyard Branch waterway. Cleanup actions are planned. 
  • Approximately 20,000 gallons of raw sewage was released from a manhole (Virginia Street) due to power loss in Quincy. The release did not enter any storm drains of waterways. Cleanup actions are planned.
  • Approximately 20,000 gallons of raw sewage was released from a lift station (Dogwood Avenue) due to power failure in Havana. The release did not enter any storm drains but did enter an unnamed creek. Cleanup actions are complete.
  • Approximately 10,000 gallons of raw sewage was released from a lift station (2225 Pat Thomas Parkway) due to power failure in Quincy. The release did not enter any storm drains of waterways. Cleanup actions are planned.
  • Approximately 10,000 gallons of raw sewage was released from a manhole (12th Avenue) due to power failure in Havana. The release did enter a storm drain which discharges into an unnamed creek. Cleanup actions are complete.
  • Approximately 2,000 gallons of raw sewage was released from a lift station (South Key Street) due to power failure in Quincy. The release did not enter any storm drains, but did enter the Tanyard Branch waterway. Cleanup actions are planned.
  • An unknown amount of raw sewage, less than 1,000 gallons, was released from a lift station (Highway 27 South) due to power failure in Havana. The release did not enter any storm drains of waterways. Cleanup actions are complete.
