TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- It seems like more and more people these days are turning to the internet as a way to meet others, whether is for dating or to buy and sell items. Luckily, there is a new app that can help put your mind at ease before the first face-to-face meeting.

This new app is called TakenMate, was released about two weeks ago, and is already getting quite a bit of attention. Now, don't let the name fool you, TakenMate is not a dating app.

Instead, it's a social verification app that uses various social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and even Tinder to help you see if the person you've been talking to is who they say they are. It doesn't stop there, though. In fact, it also uses the National Sex Offender List and identifies registered sex offenders.

If you want to search someone, whether it's the guy you met at the coffee shop, or the girl selling a sofa on Craigslist, simply type in their phone number, email, or name.

TakenMate is an "opt-in" app, meaning that only those who have registered can be searched.

"I think everyone should use TakenMate," says Samantha Mennella, the FSU Community Manager. "It's just going to make online social interactions safer. We really need something like this in today's society because social media's so popular. Online dating is so popular, and it's only growing. TakenMate is just going to put us into that direction of safety and honest relationships and interactions."

Even though TakenMate is free, every time it's downloaded, a ten cent donation will be made to a charity of your choice...and the app has a lot of charities to choose from!

So what are you waiting for? If you're meeting people online, and have nothing to hide, then this app is for you!
