TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A new app launched in Tallahassee aims to combat sexual assault.

You can use the app Social Safe to notify those around you during an emergency or even just a situation you feel uncomfortable in.

Depending on the urgency, you can alert friends and family, or the local authorities.

When you choose the option that calls 911, the app starts recording audio and video.

Molly Cloonan was a student at Florida State when she started making the app.

She was inspired to create Social Safe because she felt it was something she and her friends could use.

"So many of my friends have been through it. I know more people who have than haven't at this point. And it's a serious problem that young women and young boys do struggle with," said Cloonan. "Most of the time when these situation are happening, they can be cut off before something serious happens."

Cloonan hopes Social Safe empowers anyone to ask for help before things escalate.

You can download Social Safe when it launches in mid-August.
