TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- A Leon County Sheriff's deputy - and the gunman who killed him - are dead, after a shoot-out in Tallahassee.

Early Saturday morning, Leon County Sheriff's deputies were responding to a fire in the 3700 block of Caracus Court in Northwest Tallahassee.

But this is the scene when they arrived: fire and gunshots.

A man, who authorities say set fire to his home and walked away, ambushed the responding officers. He killed one deputy, then took his weapon and continued to fire.

"Another deputy sheriff was shot and wounded," said Lt. James McQuaig of the Leon County Sheriff's Office.

That's when multiple other law enforcement agencies responded to scene, and shot and killed the suspect.

"This is going to be a long drawn out day, and a long drawn out investigation," said Lt. McQuaig.

Those who live nearby are shocked, saying they never thought something this tragic would happen in the middle of their quiet subdivison.

"When I was trying to get into my neighborhood, just to see all the crime scene tape and all the officers... I've never seen this before in my neighborhood," said neighbor Whitney Hodges.

Authorities will hold a press conference at noon on Sunday for more details.
